Frequently Asked Questions
(AKA Everything You've Been Wondering But Maybe Felt Weird About Asking)
Acupuncture Basics
(The Stuff You're Definitely Wondering About)
What is acupuncture, really?
Acupuncture is that amazing component of Traditional East Asian Medicine where we insert ultra-thin needles (we're talking ULTRA-thin) into specific points on your body to regulate the flow of Qi (your vital energy), stimulate healing, and restore balance. If you're more of a science person, modern research shows acupuncture works by activating your nervous system, increasing blood flow to targeted areas, and triggering your body to release its own natural pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins, enkephalins, and more). Pretty cool that an ancient practice has so much modern science backing it up, right?
OK but seriously, does acupuncture hurt?
I get this question approximately 1,927 times a week, and I understand why! The good news: most people are genuinely shocked by how comfortable acupuncture is. These needles are nothing—and I mean NOTHING—like the ones used for injections or blood draws. They're hair-thin (no joke about the width of a strand of hair) and many patients don't even feel them going in.
Some people describe feeling a momentary tiny pinch like a tiny little bug bite followed by sensations like heaviness, tingling, or warmth. Those sensations? That's your Qi responding to treatment! And PS: If you're still nervous, we're trained in extra-gentle and minimalist techniques specifically for needle-phobic folks. You're in good hands here.
Is acupuncture safe? Because sticking needles in my body sounds... questionable.
Yes, 100% yes! Acupuncture is considered extremely safe when performed by a licensed practitioner (like me—Dr. Alexia Lindell, with all those fancy degrees and certifications you saw on the About page).
At Qi Society, we use only sterile, single-use disposable needles that come pre-packaged and are opened right in front of you. We follow strict clean needle protocols that exceed industry standards. The risk of adverse effects from acupuncture is minimal compared to many conventional treatments, especially when compared to medications and surgeries that come with those mile-long lists of potential side effects. The MOST common "side effect" of acupuncture? Feeling relaxed and sleeping better that night. (Terrible, I know.) Other potential side effects include minimal bruising or mild soreness at needle sites, both of which typically resolve quickly.
How does acupuncture actually work? Like, what's the science here?
There are a couple ways to answer this, and both are fascinating:
From an Eastern perspective, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of Qi through channels called meridians. When we insert needles at specific points, we're essentially removing blockages (like clearing a clogged pipe) and balancing areas that have too much or too little energy. This restores harmony to your body's systems.
From a Western scientific view (for my skeptics and science-lovers out there), acupuncture has been shown to stimulate nerve pathways, increase blood flow to targeted areas, trigger the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving neurotransmitters, and reduce inflammation markers in the body. That's why you feel so good afterward!
The coolest part? Researchers using advanced imaging techniques can actually SEE changes in brain activity during acupuncture treatments. Science is finally catching up to what Eastern practitioners have known for thousands of years.
What conditions can acupuncture actually help with? Is this just for pain, or what?
While acupuncture is AMAZING for pain (and often works when nothing else has), that's just scratching the surface. Acupuncture can help with a surprisingly wide range of conditions, including:
Pain of all types (back, neck, joints, headaches, migraines, etc.)
Stress, anxiety, depression, and general mood regulation (goodbye, Sunday scaries!)
Sleep issues (both falling asleep AND staying asleep)
Digestive problems (IBS, bloating, constipation, acid reflux)
Women's health and hormonal imbalances (PMS, PCOS, menopause symptoms, fertility support)
Allergies and sinus issues (seasonal and chronic)
Immune system support (fewer colds and quicker recovery)
Sports injuries and athletic performance enhancement
Fatigue and low energy
High blood pressure
Skin conditions (acne, eczema, psoriasis)
And this is just the highlight reel! During your consultation, we can discuss your specific concerns and whether acupuncture might help. Chances are, it can.
Our Practice FAQ
(And Why We're Not Your Average Clinic)
What makes Qi Society different from other acupuncture clinics? Because there seem to be a lot of options out there.
You're right—there are other acupuncture clinics out there. But (not to toot our own horn or anything), we're doing things a bit differently at Qi Society. Here's how:
Truly personalized treatment plans that evolve with you—because your body changes, and your care should too.
No nickel-and-diming you with surprise fees. Our time-based pricing means you get whatever therapeutic techniques you need that day without constantly pulling out your wallet for "add-ons."
Membership options that actually make sense and make consistent care realistically affordable. Because wellness shouldn't require a second mortgage.
Those Supportive Care Sessions you can't find anywhere else in New England. These quick 15-minute tune-ups between full treatments are game-changers for maintaining your progress (and they're FREE for members!).
We're big on education and empowerment. Sure, we could keep all our knowledge secret so you have to keep coming back forever, but that's not our style. We'll teach you simple self-care techniques to use between appointments because we actually want you to feel better all the time, not just when you're on our treatment table.
Oh, and Dr. Alexia's military background means the studio runs with impressive efficiency while still being warm and welcoming. It's the perfect blend of structured systems and genuine human connection.
Let's cut to the chase—how many sessions will I need before I start feeling better?
I wish I could give you a one-size-fits-all answer, but the truth is, every body is unique (and that's what keeps this work so interesting!). That said, here are some general guidelines:
Acute conditions (like that shoulder pain you got from moving furniture last weekend) typically respond quickly, often showing significant improvement within 4-8 treatments.
Chronic conditions (the stuff you've been dealing with for months or years) usually require 8-12 treatments initially to really shift things. This is because we're not just masking symptoms—we're retraining your body's systems and creating lasting change.
For optimal wellness and prevention (keeping the good vibes going), many patients choose to continue with monthly maintenance once their initial health concerns are resolved. Think of it like regular oil changes for your car—preventative care keeps everything running smoothly.
Cosmetic acupuncture fans, take note: those facial rejuvenation results typically peak with a series of 10-12 sessions. Your collagen needs time to rebuild!
During your initial consultation, we'll assess your specific situation and create a treatment plan recommendation tailored to your goals and budget. And don't worry—we'll be honest if we think acupuncture isn't the best solution for you. (Yes, that actually happens sometimes!)
Why don't you accept insurance? Is that to make more money or something?
You want to use benefits you already have, and I totally get that! The short answer is: it's actually about providing you with BETTER care, not me making more money.
While we don't participate as in-network providers with insurance companies, we do offer detailed superbills that patients with out-of-network benefits can submit for reimbursement (based on their health insurance coverage). Many of our patients get significant portions of their treatments covered this way!
This approach allows us to:
Maintain complete control over your treatment protocols without an insurance company dictating what's "medically necessary" or limiting the number of sessions you can have
Keep our administrative load manageable (dealing with insurance companies often requires at least one full-time employee just for billing!), which means we can focus our time and energy on patient care instead of paperwork
Offer more appointment availability—especially during those convenient evening and occasional weekend times that most people want
Provide you with care that isn't limited by insurance restrictions, including our unique Supportive Care Sessions, and cosmetic acupuncture treatments that insurance typically doesn’t cover anyway
Create flexible membership options that end up saving you money compared to standard insurance copays
If you have questions about using your out-of-network benefits or HSA/FSA funds for acupuncture, just ask! We're happy to help navigate those waters with you.
What should I wear to my appointment? Do I need to get completely undressed?
Good news: unlike massage therapy, acupuncture doesn't require you to disrobe! Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Think "weekend loungewear" rather than "business meeting attire."
For lower body treatments, shorts or pants that can easily roll up to the knees are ideal (leggings work too!). For upper body treatments, shirts with sleeves that can be pushed up past the elbow are helpful.
If we need to access your back or shoulders, we'll either have you change into a gown or use draping techniques that maintain your comfort and modesty throughout. Pro tip: avoid tight jeans, pencil skirts, or anything that doesn't allow for easy adjustment—they make accessing acupuncture points tricky.
What's the deal with tipping?
Unlike spa services, tipping is not expected for acupuncture treatments at Qi Society. As a licensed healthcare provider, Dr. Alexia sets professional rates that reflect the value of the medical services provided.
That said, the best "tip" you can give is referring friends and family who might benefit from our care or sharing your positive experience through a Google review. These gestures help our practice grow and are truly the highest compliment!
How should I prepare for my appointment?
How should I prepare for my appointment? I want to get the most out of it!
Love this question! Here's how to set yourself up for the best possible experience:
Save yourself the hassle and fill out your required paperwork online before your appointment. This way, we can spend your valuable session time actually treating you, not watching you scribble your medical history.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas from your knees to your toes and elbows to your fingers. Yoga pants, joggers, and t-shirts are perfect! (And yes, this is the one medical appointment where "athleisure" is actually the recommended dress code—enjoy it!)
Don't come hungry! Having a light meal or snack 1-2 hours before your appointment is ideal. Acupuncture on a completely empty stomach can sometimes make you feel lightheaded or dizzy.
Try to avoid that pre-appointment espresso shot. Caffeine can make it harder for your nervous system to relax into the treatment, and we want you to get that delicious acu-bliss feeling!
Come prepared to chat about your health history and current concerns. The more we know, the more we can help. And don't worry—nothing is TMI for us.
Plan your commute with a little buffer time, especially if you're coming around 2:30 PM. We're located across from a school, and pickup time can create some traffic congestion. Nothing ruins the pre-acupuncture zen like rushing and stressing about being late!
Pro tip: Use the bathroom before your treatment starts. Nothing's worse than being all relaxed with needles in and then suddenly you gotta go!
Membership & Packages FAQ
What exactly is this "Initial Experience Package" I keep seeing mentioned?
Think of the Initial Experience Package as your complete introduction to the Qi Society approach. It includes your in-depth initial 80-minute consultation (where we really get to know your body and its patterns) plus two 60-minute follow-up treatments.
We've created this package for two reasons:
It gives you the full Qi Society experience without a long-term commitment
It includes enough treatments to actually begin seeing results (because one session rarely solves everything)
It's our recommended starting point for most new patients, especially if you're new to acupuncture or have a complex health situation. Plus, you save $55 compared to booking these appointments individually—who doesn't love saving money while getting healthier?
Can my husband/wife/partner/teenager use some of my membership treatments? We'd like to share.
I totally understand wanting to share the acupuncture love with your family! However, memberships are designed for individual use only. This is because your treatment plan is specifically tailored to YOUR body and health patterns.
That said, we LOVE treating families and have special family discounts for households with multiple members. When multiple people in a household get treatment, we often see even better results since you're supporting each other's wellness journeys at home too. Reach out to us directly for family discount details!
What if life gets crazy and I don't use all my membership treatments in a month? Do I lose them?
Real talk: unused treatments as part of your monthly membership don't roll over to the next month. I know, I know—in an ideal world, they would!
Here's why we structure it this way: consistent treatment is what gets results. The membership is designed to encourage regular care (which is how acupuncture works best), not to accumulate "treatment savings" for a rainy day.
That said, we're super proactive about helping members schedule their sessions in advance to ensure you get your full benefits each month. We even send friendly reminders! And if you have a REALLY unusual circumstance come up, talk to us—we're human and understand that life happens.
What if I need to cancel or pause my membership? Am I locked in forever?
Definitely not locked in forever! We expect a 3-month initial commitment (where memberships can be upgraded or downgraded month-to-month), but after that, you can cancel with 30 days' notice.
For temporary situations like extended travel, major illness, or other life curveballs, we offer membership pauses. Just contact us directly to discuss your specific situation. We're flexible humans who understand that life isn't always predictable!
